Elastography : A Diagnosis Tool For Breast Cancer

You might haven't heard about Elastography before unless you are working in Imaging Department. Elastography is actually quite sometime in Medical Imaging. It is just the application of this technology is still minimal in Malaysia. Elastography is a non invasive method to confirm cancerous mass using the stiffness or strain of the soft tissue. It is widely use in breast, prostate and etc. For breast, it is very useful especially to reduced number of cases for biopsy. Since Biopsy is a quite costly procedure to determine whether the mass is malignant or benign. So, by using Elastography, we can classify the strain ratio which 1-3 is benign, >3-4 is suspected malignant and have to go through biopsy and 5 is malignant. Which can avoid the benign mass to undergo biopsy.

Why Choose Sonographer?

Last week I received an email from one of the reader who is interested to be a sonographer.

He was asking about the job opportunity and the salary.

After a few months working with distributor, I met a lot of doctors who were asking if I know any sonographer to offer a job.

From this, we can actually know, how good the job opportunities are. But the problem is, they always looking for an experience sonographer.

So, if you want to be a sonographer, make sure you get a job in a high workload places or have an initiative to do locumns to gain more experience.

The more  the workload, the more exposure you get, the more better you will be!

This is what measures your ability, your skill to be a good sonographer as well as increase your salary margin.

Salary? Well for goverment hospitals, they never hire sonographers so, the doctors will do by themselves.

But, in the teaching hospital, yes, they do hire any MLT's or Science Officers as their sonographer. This is actually a good opportunity as you will ahve a free training and with high workloads, you can easily increase your skills and knowledge in Ultrasound.

So, in teaching hospital, the salaries are according to the goverment rate.

In the private hospitals, normally they will offer RM2500 for fresh graduate and you will have to work 6 days a week. For those with experience more than 5 years, they can demand for RM4500-6000. 

Cardiac tech receive a higher salary up to RM7000.

Being a Sonographer or An Application Specialist

I've just got a mail looking  for a sonographer in a private centre. But, I think I should stay as an application specialist. eventhough my heart hurt so much when I have to watch others doing ultrasound and I know I can get better and much2 more infos on the scan. You know, I really miss being a sonographer.But the reality is, I'm no longer a sonographer. Either to pursue my career in sonography or just go with the flow as an Apps. I have to choose. Choose between working something you like but not being able to do more or doing something a little higher, a little more but it is quite different.Especially when you do this for someone you love. Making sure you're doing enough to provide them a better life.

Being a sonographer, you offer service  to the patients. But as an apps, you serve the end user and train them. Apps is a little higher. But we specialize in systems and applications. But as a sonographer, they specialize in diagnose the patients. 

I learnt a lot from being a sonographer. The good and bad way. 

But both job have one thing in common. Face the people. 

A sonographer faces the patients.

I face the end user.

But so far, I have good time doing Apps.

But, I just can't get rid of feeling like I want to grab the probe and do the ultrasound. LOL!

Whatever it is, after some times I'm gonna love this job by heart just like how I love my job as a cytogeneticist in HKL, a sonographer in HUKM.

I'm gonna love being an Application Specialist in Abex Medical Systems.

That is my new year resolution!

no turning back.

Just go with flow but ahead of the flow.

Winning is my habit, so  I have to be proactive and positive.

I'm Going To Abex!

I'd just accept an offer from Abex as an application specialist in cardiac. Soon i'll be leaving my lovely friends in PPUKM. I'm going to miss all the sweet memories with them.They are all nice to me all these years. The professors, specialists, specialist-to-be's , the houseman, officers, sonographers, staff nurses, clinic assistants, ppukm nannies, guards and each and everyone I know. It's hard to believe that I am going to leave this centre as I truly love working as a sonographer here. But, there is something that makes me have to go on. If it means I have to go somewhere else, I have to do so. For me, for my husband, for my son and for my family. To change my destiny for the best of all.

Just got a call from BP healthcare for an interview on Friday. Hmm it has been a long time since my last interview. What will they expect from me? Wonder??? What ever it is, I am asking you guys, please pray for my success....Hopefully there's something new and better for me somewhere out there..:o)

Private Sector v/s Gov Sector

This morning, I'd just got a phone call from my senior sonographer. She ask me if I'm interested in finding new job with new challenges. I thought she was just kidding with me. But it was totally not a joke and it's real! She was offering me a job with this big company! I'd always thinking about getting a job from this company but never had a nerve to do so since I am not a risk taker. I love challenges but I rather stick to the comfort zone I 've been in all this while. But working for almost 7 years in gov sector, makes me craving for something more in every aspect. Salary wise is for sure. It is an application specialist they are offering. Since I love meeting new people, I guess this is the best job offer for me. What you guys think? Should I go for it?

MFM Meeting 2010

We just had a meeting with our Head of Unit. The meeting went well of course. I'm glad that every opinion I made were being heard by everyone in the meeting. We are going to organised a basic course end of this year and I really can't wait! I love doing this kind of activities especially in sharing and gaining knowledge. Education and training.

There are several avenues for entry into the field of diagnostic medical sonography. Sonographers may train in hospitals, vocational-technical institutions, colleges or universities, or the Armed Forces. Some training programs prefer applicants with experience in other healthcare professions or high school graduates with courses in mathematics, health, and science.

Colleges and universities offer formal training in both 2-year and 4-year programs, resulting in either an associate or a bachelor's degree. Two-year programs are the most prevalent. Coursework includes classes in anatomy, physiology, instrumentation, basic physics, patient care, and medical ethics. In 2008, the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP) accredited over 150 training programs. Accredited programs are offered by colleges and universities. Some hospital programs are accredited as well.

A few 1-year programs that typically result in a vocational certificate also are accepted as proper education by employers. These programs are useful usually only for workers already employed in a healthcare occupation who seek to increase their marketability by training in sonography.

Work environment.

Sonographers typically work in healthcare facilities that are clean. They usually work at diagnostic imaging machines in darkened rooms, but they also may perform procedures at patients' bedsides. Sonographers may be on their feet for long periods of time and may have to lift or turn disabled patients.

Some sonographers work as contract employees and may travel to several healthcare facilities in an area. Similarly, some sonographers work with mobile imaging service providers and travel to patients and use mobile diagnostic imaging equipment to provide service in areas that otherwise would not have access to such services.

Most full-time sonographers work about 40 hours a week. Some sonographers work overtime. Also, sonographers may have evening and weekend hours when they are on call and must be ready to report to work on short notice. 

p/s: This is the work environment for the sonographers in US or UK.It is quite different here in Malaysia. We don't travel except for those who do locums and part time as an application specialist.

Obstetric Ultrasound Training

Since people are asking me to update them with the coming courses in Malaysia, I just want to inform you guys that, PPUKM Fetomaternal Unit is always open for any doctors who interested to learn ultrasound in our centre. I'm not sure about the payment and duration of the training. You should give us a call and discuss it with our Head  of Dept and Head of Unit.

Sonographer Salary In Malaysia

I noticed that almost everyday, my visitors were searching for the salary of a sonographer back in Malaysia. Actually, this is a new job in Malaysia. So far the sonographer hired by private hospitals are those with 10 years over experience. As for me, I work in government hospital. So, the salary is according to the 41 grade. Not much but still something to make life goes on....I have a friend who work as an application specialist in ultrasound for an international company. She told me that her salary is RM6k and she can get as high as 15k a month depending on her locum as well. This is truly a job that people looking for but it is still new in Malaysia. All you got to do is graduated and get a job and dig as much experience and skills  as you can and you'll be as valuable as my friend. But, hey, if you don't mind about being abroad, just try to get a job in UK. The pay is much more higher than in Malaysia. trust me!
